Project Overview:
CEPROSI (Center for the Promotion of Holistic Health, based in Nindiri, NICARAGUA) is an organization that works with women of Nindiri to improve the nutrition and health of the wider community and to develop sustainable economic opportunities. CEPROSI staff and beneficiaries use natural medicines and nutritional education to help the community be proactive in taking care of their health. Women of the project also produce natural products to sell on the wider market, in natural pharmacies in local villages and hopefully on a national scale eventually. This production allows the women to earn a sustainable income while at the same time improving the quality of life for members of their community.
Recent Accomplishments:
Products became registered with the Ministry of Health
Successful financial management in the promotion and commercialization of natural products produced by the cooperative
Market research produced by the cooperative Sol de Vida and by IPM and others
Women continued to receive trainings on natural medicine and reproductive health
Number of People Directly Served by Project:
30 women participate in the Natural Medicine and Nutritional Education classes
Number of People Indirectly Served by Project:
190 family members benefit from the women’s improved knowledge of nutrition and dealing with other health issues.
Goals for 2008:
In 2008, the organized women's collective will continue to increase their knowledge about natural medicine, nutrition, and reproductive health to better the lives of their families and the community
To encourage concrete actions that contribute to improving the food, nutritional, and health situation of the women and of the three participating communities
To continue to create income generation opportunities for the participants through the production of medicines derived from natural plants.
IPM Funding Goal for 2008:
$2,500
Community Impact:
The meetings and workshops by the health promoters awoke the conscience of a conservative 55 year old woman with low self-esteem. She was way past due to go to the gynecologist, but eventually got up the courage to go. She became convinced of the positive message promoted by CEPROSI and the impact CEPROSI is having in her community. Now she is excited to use natural medicine and she actively participates in all the program’s activities.
