Women's Nutritional Program
Project Overview:
Women’s Nutritional Program (El Cercado, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC) is an initiative in El Cercado which will give local women an employment opportunity in a women’s cooperative. The women will produce nutritional products to be readily available to low-income or undernourished community members. The area has long struggled with poverty and lack of adequate social services. Poverty, particularly in remote areas, has been accompanied by environmental degradation as poor farmers have to struggle to earn a living and feed their families from increasingly depleted soils. The cooperative is partnering with local agriculture community cooperatives to package milk based nutritional products for malnourished children and pregnant women. Additionally, to supplement the income, the women will also produce specialty items such as canned fruits and marmalades for potential export. Members of the cooperative will receive training and expertise from a local bread cooperative which has developed successfully over the past five years.
Recent Accomplishments:
• Production of jams, juices, and wines
• Completed training course in small business
Goals for 2008:
• Complete another training course
• Develop relationship with local co-op bakery
• Sell products to Diocesan Medical Warehouse, local pharmacies, and 10 medical chests.
IPM Funding Goal for 2008:
$2,500
Community Impact:
Felicita is a member of the Women’s Nutritional Program. She describes the impact of the program on her life: “I am so happy about being a member of this cooperative venture. I was planning on going to the Capital to work cleaning houses and washing clothes to supplement my husband’s income because we are just not making enough money these days. But now I decided to stay and see if our micro enterprise can help my family economically. If we can get this business off the ground we can really make a difference in improving the nutrition of so many malnourished children in our community as well as making a great product. With God’s help.”
