Asante & Zawadi

Project Overview:
Asante & Zawadi (Kayunga, UGANDA) works to give visibility to the plight of rural women in the transition from communal to private property ownership in Uganda, and build a village that will provide opportunities for reciprocal learning between women and leaders at the community, national and international level.

The future of gender equality in Uganda is at a pivotal point.  Currently, Uganda (and much of Africa) is under pressure from the World Bank to privatize land ownership.  This transition from communal property ownership to private, individual ownership is dangerous for the women of Uganda.  If a husband decides to kick his wife out of the home, a woman has no recourse for legal action and no community property laws to protect her.  It is during this time, when property laws are in transition, that the rights of Ugandan women must be secured.  By allowing women to hold property, and thus securing their own freedom and future, Ugandan communities, the country of Uganda and whole of Africa are strengthened.
