Unyolo Village Improvement Project (UVIP)

Project Overview:
Unyolo Village Improvement Project (Unyolo Village, KENYA) supports children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Kenya through education and community assistance. UVIP has created a community-based nursery and school where children have the opportunity to learn and play. The community participants of Unyolo work together to make handcrafts like soapstone crafts and baskets to raise money and support the work of the project. Unyolo Village is also a popular stop on the IPM Immersion trip to Kenya, and the children of UVIP have captured the hearts of many IPM volunteers.

Recent Accomplishments:
The Project purchased a parcel of land in the village for a women’s cooperative.

Number of People Directly Served by Project:
100 children, 40 women, 6 teenagers

Number of People Indirectly Served by Project:
48 families

Goals for 2008:

Reach out for internally displaced persons in the village.

Start a cooperative for women.

Enhance education system for orphans.

Build a Kitchen and a storage shed for food in the village.

Recruit a village based health worker.

IPM Funding Goal for 2008:
$10,000

Community Impact:

"Esther lost her dad in 1985 when she was very young.  Our project assisted her at school and later she chose to pursue a career in nursing.  She is now happily serving the community."

How your donation may be put to use:
$100 provides one child in Unyolo Village with food and nutrition for one year.

$1000 support local income generating initiatives for women, including vegetable and dairy farming and handcrafts.
